Papua New Guinea parliamentary strengthening program

CDI is working with the Pacific Parliamentary Partnerships program and the PNG Parliament to deliver a parliamentary strengthening program that contributes to the professional development of parliamentarians, capacity building of parliamentary secretariats, and community engagement by parliament. PNG, QLD and Australian parliamentary staff and parliamentarians are engaged in a range of activities under each of these strategic goals. The activities include the development of a human resources strategy and corporate plan for the PNG Parliament, and a training program that focuses on key parliamentary skills including effective use of parliamentary procedures, understanding budgetary processes, debating, committee work, media skills, and managing constituency relations.

The tripartite arrangement reflects a coordinated approach to the delivery of assistance to the PNG Parliament. It will provide PNG parliamentary staff with access to expertise across a range of parliamentary functions. The arrangement also enables ongoing relationship building between the Parliaments on the foundation of a formal Parliamentary Partnership Agreement between the QLD and PNG Parliaments signed last year.
